DO I REALLY NEED TRAVEL INSURANCE?

LET'S TALK TRAVEL INSURANCE

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

The only answer I have is yes, yes, yes!

If you have a reason not to buy it, I’ve heard it.  However, travel insurance is just like other insurance you carry.  You have it JUST IN CASE.  Just in case a car crashes into your car.… just in case you fall and break your leg …. just in case something happens to your home.  I know, because I used to say it as well.

I truly wish nothing bad would happen to anyone ever, but it does. A prime example of this is COVID-19.  We’ll discuss this in a future blog.  It has to have its own.

Taking a vacation is a financial investment, and you should cover your investment with travel insurance.

Let me tell you about the time I almost lost my vacation investment.

The first time we ever planned an international family vacation, we planned a graduation cruise for our oldest daughter, Gina.  Planning this trip for us was a financial stretch to begin with because we had four kids and we planned to take them all on the cruise.  Our vacation included a pre-night stay at the airport before leaving for the cruise, the flights for all of us, transfers to and from the cruise ship and two cabins on the cruise.  We started planning this trip in October of her senior year with a departure date in May following her graduation.  I didn’t buy travel insurance because I didn’t think it necessary because we were going, NO MATTER WHAT.

However, that decision came back to haunt me about two weeks prior to our departure.  One of the other kids got sick and the trip was called into question.  Our son Nolan came down with pneumonia and the doctor advised he might not be able to make the trip.  You don’t expect a healthy 5th grader to develop something like that in the late spring in the south.  Just doesn’t happen, but it did.  We got lucky, he recovered quickly and we were able to make the cruise.  Since then I have purchased travel insurance for every trip we’ve taken.  I have had to use it a time or two and I’ve been quite thankful I had the coverage.
Now there are tons of options out there for travel insurance and there is no way for a travel advisor to know them all, so I’ve selected a couple of companies I recommend.  I’m not a licensed insurance agent, but I do try to help guide my clients to the policy that offers the best coverage for an affordable price. Since the cost of the policy is typically based on the cost of the trip and the length of the trip, the more you spend the more the coverage costs.

Now my story involved cancelling the entire trip, but travel insurance coverage doesn’t just cover cancellation.  There are options for medical coverage, baggage coverage, trip interruption coverage and much more.  Some polices actually have rider for cancellation if your fur baby becomes ill and you don’t want to travel. (This is add-on).
